JAPAN DOWN TO ONE NUCLEAR POWER STATION IN OPERATION

No 6 unit at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power station  in Japan's Niigata prefecture has been taken offline by TEPCO for maintenance. Just one nuclear plant remains in operation in Japan, on Hokkaido island.

The Hokkaido nuclear plant is the last of 54 nuclear reactors remaining in operation. It is due to be switched off in May.

Local communities and residents have demanded that reactors are left switched off after maintenance due to safety fears.

  1. setting off all the Nuclear power plants would not solve the problem ,but instead it might create a big problem for the government to meet with the growing demand of electric power in the country .According to me all the nuclear plants much be checked out and all necessary safety measures must be implanted . Government should also see the safety its people as nuclear radiation is very harmful and must employ people or establish a department to prepare for such happenngs

  2. Thank you, Liza.
I agree, you are correct to stress the vital importance of all safety measures that must be taken in Japan. A major concern I have is that despite the technological expertise available in Japan, and the great experience in earthquake risks, yet still the unanticipated happened. Nuclear power is so risky. And the dreadful legacy of nuclear waste for future generations - the radioactive waste disposal problem is still unsolved. I think we have to devote far more effort worldwide for renewable energy sources.
